The pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase Y03 is of bacterial origin and thermostable up to 60°C. Pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylases catalyze the reversible phosphorolytic breakdown of the N-glycosidic bond of the pyrimidine nucleosides uridine, thymidine and 2'-deoxyuridine with the formation of the corresponding pyrimidine base and pentose-1-phosphate. The enzyme does not distinguish between alpha-D-ribose 1-phosphate and 2-deoxy-alpha-D-ribose 1-phosphate in the synthetic direction.
